Villas in East Pattaya and Huay Yai are built for family life and entertaining. How to plan an open kitchen that connects to the pool.

East Pattaya, Huay Yai and Bang Saray are home to many pool villas for families and weekend visitors from Bangkok. These homes usually have a large open living space where the kitchen, dining area and lounge flow towards the pool.

01

Zone the space

Even in an open plan, a kitchen works best with clear zones: preparation, cooking, washing and serving. An island can separate the cook from guests while keeping everyone together.

02

Connect to the terrace

Place the fridge, glasses and serving space close to the terrace doors. Many owners add an outdoor bar or barbecue area, so plan a short, clear route between inside and outside.

03

Storage for family weekends

Weekend homes fill up with family and friends. Plan generous drawers, a pantry for bulk shopping and space for large platters and party equipment.

04

Easy to close up

When the villa is empty during the week, the kitchen should be easy to clean and leave. Integrated appliances, sealed worktops and durable fronts help.

05

Plan your villa kitchen

Send your villa plan and tell us how many people usually stay. We will propose a layout that suits both busy weekends and quiet weekdays.

06

Keep cooking smells out of the lounge

In an open-plan villa, the smell of frying garlic and chilli reaches the sofas, curtains and bedrooms within minutes, so ventilation matters more than in a closed kitchen. Choose a hood at least as wide as the hob, ideally a little wider, and duct it outside by the shortest, straightest route possible. Every bend reduces how well it works.

A recirculating hood with carbon filters is better than nothing, but it removes less grease and moisture and the filters need regular changing. If you are building or renovating a villa in East Pattaya, plan the duct route through an external wall early.

Many families who love Thai cooking also add a small wok station on a covered terrace or in a utility room. Heavy frying happens there, while the open kitchen is kept for lighter cooking, serving and entertaining.

07

Hide the everyday clutter

When the kitchen is part of the living room, everything on the worktop is on display. Kettles, toasters, coffee machines, chargers and the fruit bowl quickly make an open kitchen look busy. A tall unit with pocket doors, or a worktop-level appliance cupboard with a roller or lift-up door, gives these items a home that closes when guests arrive.

Think about what the lounge sees. The back of the island should be finished like furniture, with matching panels or seating, not bare carcass sides. If another position works as well, avoid placing the sink, with its dish rack and sponges, directly in view of the sofa.

Integrated bins in a pull-out under the sink, a slim drawer for cloths and cleaning products, and a charging drawer for phones all help the kitchen stay calm and tidy.

08

Noise in a big open room

Pattaya villas are often finished with large floor tiles, concrete ceilings and wide glass doors. These hard surfaces look clean but bounce sound around, so a dishwasher, hood or blender can be heard across the whole living area.

Compare the noise ratings of dishwashers and hoods before you buy, and choose a hood that does its job on a lower, quieter setting rather than one that must run flat out. Position the dishwasher away from the end of the room where people watch television.

Soft-close drawers and doors make a real difference when someone cooks early while others sleep. Fabric seating at the island, a large rug in the dining zone and curtains on the terrace doors absorb sound and make the whole space feel calmer, especially when the villa is full at the weekend.

09

Make the kitchen part of the living space

In an open-plan villa the kitchen is one piece of furniture in a larger room, so it should share a palette with the floor, dining table and lounge. Pick one or two materials that repeat, such as a timber tone on the island and dining chairs, or a stone colour that echoes the floor tiles, and keep the rest quiet.

Running the worktop or a matching shelf into the dining zone ties the spaces together, as does a tall unit that continues into a sideboard or bar cabinet. Handleless fronts or slim handles keep the long view across the room clean.

Light reflected from the pool fills many East Pattaya living rooms in the afternoon. High-gloss fronts look striking in photos but show every fingerprint in that light, while satin and matt finishes sit more comfortably in a bright room.

10

Power and water points

Open-plan kitchens often need services in places a closed kitchen does not. An island may need sockets for small appliances, an under-counter drinks fridge, a sink and a dishwasher. A fridge with an ice maker or a plumbed coffee machine needs a cold water point, and a dining zone may need a floor socket for a lamp or table grill.

In a new build, these points run through the floor before tiling, so agree them early. Many Pattaya villas are bought as resale homes, and in an existing villa adding an island sink can mean cutting through finished tiles. Sometimes it is simpler to keep wet services on the wall and use the island for preparation and seating.

Ask an electrician to confirm the circuits can take the extra load. Send us your villa plan, room measurements and photos, and we will mark where each point should go.
