Kitchen finishes for sunny, west-facing Pattaya homes

Strong afternoon sun can fade and warp the wrong materials. Choose fronts, worktops and blinds that stay looking new.

Many Pattaya condos and villas face west towards the sea, which means beautiful sunsets and strong afternoon sun on the kitchen. UV light and heat can fade colours, yellow some plastics and warm dark worktops.

01

UV-stable fronts

Quality laminates, PU lacquers and acrylic fronts with UV-stable finishes hold their colour better than cheap foils. Ask for samples and compare them in daylight in your own home.

02

Worktops in the sun

Quartz is practical for everyday use, but some colours can change under constant direct sun. Sintered stone and granite are more UV-resistant, which suits kitchens beside large windows or terraces.

03

Colour choices

Very dark fronts and worktops absorb heat and show dust. Mid-tones, natural wood looks and warm whites stay cooler to the touch and look fresh for longer in bright rooms.

04

Control the light

Blinds, tinted glass or a deep balcony overhang protect both the kitchen and the cook. Plan window treatments together with the kitchen layout so they do not clash with wall cabinets.

05

Tell us which way your kitchen faces

Send photos taken in the afternoon and we will suggest finishes that suit the light in your home.

06

Natural wood and veneer in strong light

Real timber changes colour in sunlight. Oak and ash tend to yellow and deepen, teak darkens to a rich brown, and some stained veneers fade. In a west-facing Pattaya kitchen this happens faster on the fronts that catch the afternoon sun, so one run of cabinets can end up a different shade from the run in the shade.

Watch for shadow lines too. A fruit bowl, a kettle or a stool that always stands in the same spot leaves a lighter patch on a wooden or veneered surface once it is moved.

If you love the look of wood but the kitchen gets direct sun, consider a woodgrain laminate, or veneer with a UV-protective lacquer, on the sunny side, and keep real timber for areas out of direct light, such as an inside wall or the base of the island.

07

Gloss, glare and visible dust

Low evening sun across a high-gloss front or a polished worktop shows every streak, fingerprint and speck of dust, and it can reflect glare straight into the eyes of the cook. In a bright, sea-facing room, matte, satin or lightly textured finishes are calmer to look at and hide marks between cleans.

The same applies to the backsplash. A glossy glass panel behind the hob looks clean at noon but shows splashes clearly when the sun is low. A honed stone, a satin-finish panel or a textured tile is more forgiving.

If you prefer some shine, use it on vertical surfaces out of the line of the sun, such as tall units on a side wall, and keep the worktop and the fronts facing the window matte.

08

Keep heat away from fronts and edges

Sun is not the only source of heat. Built-in ovens, dishwashers on a drying cycle and the space beside a gas hob all warm the cabinets around them. In a room that already gets hot in the afternoon, this extra heat is where wrapped fronts and edges fail first.

Vinyl-wrapped, membrane-pressed fronts can lift and peel when heat builds up, especially next to an oven. Laminate, lacquered MDF and acrylic fronts with well-bonded edges cope better. Ask for heat-shield strips or spacers between the oven and neighbouring doors, and keep exactly to the ventilation gaps the appliance requires.

Leave a small gap where the worktop meets a wall or a tall unit, covered by a trim or silicone, so materials can expand slightly in the heat without cracking the joint.

09

Appliances in a sunny kitchen

A fridge standing in a stripe of afternoon sun or next to the oven works harder, uses more power and ages faster. Place it on the shaded side of the kitchen where possible, and leave the ventilation space above and behind it that the manufacturer recommends, since many condo kitchens squeeze the fridge into a tight tall unit.

Wine coolers are even more sensitive to heat and light, so keep them out of direct sun. Digital displays and plastic control panels can also discolour in strong UV light over time.

If the layout leaves no shaded place for the fridge, solid tall-unit doors or a fixed blind on the nearest window will protect it more than any choice of finish.

10

Protect the kitchen while the home is empty

Many Pattaya condos are used for weekends, holidays or part of the year. With the air-conditioning off and the curtains open, a west-facing room can become very hot every afternoon, day after day, which ages finishes much faster than normal use.

Before leaving, close blackout curtains or blinds on the sunny side, and consider a smart thermostat or timer that runs the air-conditioning for part of the day to limit heat and humidity. Leave the fridge door ajar if it is switched off, and keep fruit and plastic items off a sunny worktop.

A building manager or cleaner who opens and closes the curtains on a routine can make a real difference. Send us your floor plan with a few afternoon photos, and we will plan finishes around the light.
